History of Jews in Poland to be developed in Warsaw
The completed masterplan for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw should be completed any day.
The US$63m museum, the brainchild of the Jewsih Historical Institute Association, is to be sited on 13,000sq m of land donated by WarsawCity Council, oppsite the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Memorial.
Being designed by Frank O. Gehry - who designed the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain - the 15,810sq m museum will have 3,200sq m of permanent exhibition space, an information centre, education centre, two lecture halls and a cinema/theatre/concert hall venue with seating capacity for 500. There will also be conference facilities and a restaurant.
In a mission statement, the association said: 'The museum is a center for education as well as remembrance and is dedicated to teaching people of all ages and backgrounds about the history and culture that the Jewish nation produced on Polish soil.'
Visitors will be taken on a 'virtual journey' created by London-based Event Communications, which will include light and sounds effects and the recreation of streets as well as a database of over 50,000 documents and artefacts, which the Association is the process of registering from all over the world.
There will also be remote access to information through a website.
The museum, expected to open in 2007, aims to attract 250,000 a year, including 50,000 young Israelis, and 30,000 American Jews.
Funding is coming from Polish public funds, private donations, the EU and private and public foundations in the US, Israel and Europe.
