House of Parliament fails to woo visitors as an attraction
Last summer's seven-week pilot-scheme making the Palace of Westminster a tourist attraction failed to arouse substantial interest according to a report by MPs. The Commons Administration Committee has announced that 40,580 people took up the £3.50 guided tour of the Houses of Parliament, 15,000 fewer than the most pessimistic prediction. Most of the visitors were anticipated to be foreign tourists but that was also off the mark with 78 per cent being British, most of whom were from the south-east of England. Additionally, merchandise sales fell below expectations recording a net loss of £15,000. Some £138,000 worth of goods were sold, less than a third of the expected sales figures. However, visitor satisfaction was high at 95 per cent, and despite the lack of response MPs on the committee have recommended a second trial-run this summer.
