Iconic Falkirk Wheel wins ISPAL award
The amazing Falkirk Wheel, an engineering landmark for Scotland and the world’s first and only rotating boat lift, received the ISPAL-sponsored award for “Recreation and Tourism” at the recent Waterways Renaissance Awards Ceremony.
Since the 1930s this incredible 35m high, 1,500 tonne structure had fallen into disrepair and disuse, but it was refurbished in the late 1990s with funding from the Millennium Commission totalling £17.5m, and opened again in 2002.
It has now firmly established itself as one of Scotland’s premier tourist attractions bringing in 500,000 visitors each year.
David Johnston, from ISPAL, in the North West, presented the award on behalf of ISPAL in front of a packed house at the Imperial War Museum.
The project went on to win a special award for “Outstanding Achievement” as it exemplified true vision in waterway regeneration and restoration.
