Investigation into Alton Towers blaze
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has launched an investigation into the cause of a blaze that destroyed part of the Skyride cable car ride at Alton Towers theme park in the UK on 21 July.
No-one was injured in the blaze at the Cloud Cuckoo Land station, which is believed to have started around 10.30pm before being brought under control by six fire crews and members of park staff. In a statement, Alton Towers said that the theme park remains open to the public as normal, although some areas have now been fenced off in order to allow investigators to carry out a probe into the cause of the fire.
A spokesperson for the theme park said: "The station has been destroyed and the Skyride will therefore not reopen for the foreseeable future." SFRS assistant area commander, Andy Kinsman, told the BBC: "We don't believe at this stage there's anything untoward with the start of the fire. However, we've got to now look at CCTV footage and look at the procedures for closing down the station that Alton Towers staff goe through."
It is the second time in as many years that a fire has damaged one of Alton Towers' Skyride station, with 50 firefighters called to deal with a similar blaze at the attraction in October 2007.
