Irish National Aquatic Centre now open
The Irish National Aquatic Centre in Dublin has officially opened.
The NAC, the first building of its kind in Ireland, will provide much needed public access to high-quality swimming facilities but will also be used competitively - hosting the swimming events of the Special Olympics in June.
The centre cost around £40m to complete and comprises two main areas - the competition pool and a leisure dome pool - designed by architects, S&P.
The 50m competition pool hall has been created to meet all FINA competition requirements. With submersible, movable booms and floors, the pool's length and depth can be adjusted. There is also a competition diving pool.
Including touch-pad timing systems, the hall also features comprehensive pool-side provision for officials, as well as 2,500 seats.
The recreational pool dome features waterslides, a lazy river, a wave beach and children's features - including a pirates galleon.
The centre has a wet-dry café which can be accessed from the leisure pool as well as the main reception area.
The complex also features a health club- with studios overlooking the pool, sauna and steam room - which will have a separate membership package. Details: www.nac.ie
