Johnson defends Great Space funding
London major Boris Johnson has defended his pledge to award £200,000 to the Great Spaces initiative, following recent criticism that the sum isn't enough to achieve serious results.
The scheme, targeted at refurbishing some of the capital's public spaces which offer poor access, is to spend the £200,000 to help with feasibility, design and promotion of existing projects. Split between London's 33 borough, this equates to £6,000 each. Mike Tuffrey, leader of the Liberal Democrat's London Assembly Group,, criticised it as a "drop in the ocean compared to the scale of the task" and questioned what £200,000 could realistically achieve – given that any one scheme could run into a million or more in costs.
In response Johnson said: "The £200,000 I announced is a modest pot of money targeted at the boroughs, allowing them to bring forward new projects that need a kick start. It forms only one part of the initiative. "Where great schemes emerge with borough backing and popular support I will work with the London Development Agency and Transport for London to see whether we can help piece together the funding to make them happen.
"I also fully expect projects that are currently planned or indeed underway, that are funded by the GLA family and other organisations to join the programme so that we can build, together, an initiative that will make a significant difference to the public spaces of our city." London boroughs can submit projects at any stage of the development process for consideration to the design panel, led by deputy mayor for planning and policy, Simon Milton.
