King’s Cross Central a step closer
Camden Council is due to debate a £2bn proposal for the redevelopment of the 67-acre site at King’s Cross on 8–9 March.
Heather Johnson, chair of Camden Council’s development control sub-committee, together with 15 councillors, will debate a 600-page report prepared by another branch of the council which endorses the redevelopment, following six years of negotiations and 11 planning applications.
The project will comprise open parks and squares, galleries, music venues, a swimming pool, housing, office space, shops and a school, as well as preserving many of the historic railway structures.
If successful, the project must also gain approval from the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, before work can begin on obtaining detailed approval. Completion of phases one and two are scheduled for 2010 and 2012, respectively.
If and when full planning permission for the first phase is granted, developer Argent will have the right to acquire the site, and the current owners – London & Continental Railways (LCR) and Deutsche Post – will have the right to sell a 50 per cent interest.
