Locals Join In with Edinburgh Leisure carnival
Edinburgh Leisure held a free end of term carnival recently in which 1,000 local people joined in a range of activities combining sport, exercise and fun.
The event, called Join In, was designed to give a taste of the activities the leisure trust has on offer this summer and follows on from its Happy Parade through Edinburgh city centre last September - the start of the trust's Feel Good campaign.
Event organiser Michael Pinkerton said: "We had such a fantastic response to our parade last year, that we felt it was only right to keep up the momentum.
"Our aims for Join In remained the same: that we give children and their parents or guardians a taste of what we do, but also offering them a good fun, healthy and happy afternoon in the fresh air.
"If were able to pass on even a little bit of our enthusiasm for sport, exercise and healthier living, then we can be safe in the knowledge that we met our event objectives."
As well sports such as golf, football, rugby, mountain-biking and tennis, other Join In activities included cheerleading, sumo suits, tug 'o' war, facepainting and even 'old school sports' like sack and egg and spoon races.
Keith Jackson, chief executive of Edinburgh Leisure added: "As the largest leisure provider in the city, we share the City of Edinburgh Council's vision to make Edinburgh the most active city in Europe by 2020.
"Through this event, we hoped to send out a strong message to people in Edinburgh and to the rest of Scotland that we're leading the way when it comes to physical activity and leading healthy and fulfilling lives. We want more and more people to participate in physical activity and we hope the Carnival will inspire people to do just that."
