London 2012 in greenest Games pledge
Organisers of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics have pledged to ensure the event "will set new standards in sustainability" after unveiling the latest Games' green proposals.
London 2012's Sustainability Plan, Towards a One Planet 2012, reported a 15 per cent decline in carbon emissions as part of the venue construction process. In total, London 2012's carbon footprint during the seven-year period between winning the 2012 bid and hosting the Games is only expected to contribute 0.05 per cent of the UK's total emissions.
The document, which addresses the themes of climate change, biodiversity, waste, healthy living and inclusion, has also revealed the organisers' plans to ensure that nearly all construction waste is recycled or reused. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has committed to a zero-waste to landfill policy during the event, and will work with suppliers and contractors to ensure measures are in place to increase recycling opportunities and reduce the carbon footprint.
LOCOG chair Sebastian Coe said: "Sustainability has underpinned this project from day one. From construction to how we will stage the Games in 2012, we're constantly looking at ways to ensure we're setting new standards in how major events are staged - responsibly, with legacy in mind."
