Work is underway on new facilities at Halstead Sports Centre following a £1.7m grant from the Sport England Lottery Fund.
The money goes towards the £4.4m cost of building an indoor swimming complex, a hockey-sized synthetic pitch, a multi-games area and fitness room. The pool complex replaces the Halstead Pool, a former dye tank donated to the area in 1914.
Leisure development manager at Braintree District Council, Ashley Bartlett said a sports development plan was in place involving school, clubs and disabled groups for the project, which is due to complete in April 2004.
