Low pay still an issue for fitness industry
Initial findings from SkillsActive’s 2008 Working in Fitness survey show that, once again, low rates of pay is the biggest factor that would make employees leave the industry.
Of the 800 Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) members who took part in the 2008 questionnaire, nearly 60 per cent said their low pay might make them leave the industry.
Next on the list, 38 per cent of respondents said they might leave in order to seek better prospects or career paths in other industries.
The survey also showed that just two-fifths of REPs members received a pay rise during 2008. Of those, 56 per cent received an increase of jsut 2.5 per cent or less - well below the annual rate of inflation.
The average rate of commission for the industry is £211 across all REPs occupations, although only four per cent of the workforce earned any commission at all.
