Luton to get £25m swimming centre
A new £24.9m aquatics centre is set to be built in Luton, Bedfordshire, after proposals were given the go-ahead by the local authority.
Luton Borough Council (LBC) approved the plans for the facility on 17 November, which will incorporate an Olympic-sized, 50m swimming pool and a diving centre. The new centre, which it is hoped will be ready to open in 2012, will also include a sports hall, a fitness suite, an aerobics centre and a cafe, as well as creche facilities and meeting rooms.
Hazel Simmons, leader of LBC, said: "Luton deserves a fantastic swimming pool and the facilities associated with a first-class aquatics centre. Developing the health of our residents, both young and old, and investing in the future of potential sports champions is something the council has made a strong commitment to." David Sparkes, chief executive of the Amateur Swimming Association, said: "We believe the proposals will meet the swimming requirements of the whole community, leading to greater swimming participation in Luton and all the associated health benefits this will give."
