Man Utd gambling on the future?
The communications director of football club, Manchester United, Paddy Haverson, has responded to an article in the Financial Times saying the club is due to work with MGM Mirage, the world’s largest gaming group, to open a Manchester United-themed casino.
Haverson said: “The story about Manchester United opening a casino came out of a discussion as to where we could take the Man Utd brand but it was somewhat overstated.
“There were no specific plans for business in that area and it hasn’t got beyond the discussion stage at this time. It’s early days to suggest that we’re extending the brand into other areas such as casinos. We’re considering the opportunities available to us but nothing has confirmed or agreed as yet.”
However, Man Utd’s recent European business deals have shown that the club is eager to explore a variety of brand extension possibilities.
These have included a deal with Village Cinemas International (VCI) to launch a £1.75m, Man Utd-themed Red Cinema at Salford Quays, Manchester and a Nike-brokered deal to run children’s soccer schools at Disneyland Paris which, if successful, could then be rolled out to Disney’s US resort locations.
