Manchester restaurant fined for cockroach infestation
A Manchester restaurant has been fined a maximum £40,000 after pleading guilty to eight counts of breaching the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995.
The Shere Khan restaurant in Rusholme was visited after a customer reported seeing a cockroach and an active infestation was found – as well as ‘grossly greasy and dirty wall and floor surfaces’ and ‘grossly dirty equipment including mouldy chopping boards, and dirt-encrusted surfaces of food preparation tables’.
The company, which was looking to expand, has agreed to close the premises for cleaning and treating of the cockroach infestation.
Councillor Neil Swannick, executive member for planning and the environment for Manchester City Council, said "To put the public at risk in this way was totally unacceptable and the Shere Khan should have ensured effective management of the premises at all times.
“It was inexcusable to neglect one part of the business while expanding in other areas. Businesses must ensure that they have thorough cleaning regimes in place at all times and work together with their pest control contractors to eliminate food sources and harbourage."
