May 2007 launch for One KX
Central YMCA has announced that its new London-based health and arts centre, called One KX, will formally open in May 2007.
Situated in Kings Cross, the five-storey, 10,000sq ft (930sq m) disused former youth club has been transformed into a health and arts centre with a mission statement to “provide inspiration, education and opportunities for health in mind, body and spirit with the community of Kings Cross”.
The revamp of the property, which is situated in one of the most economically deprived but ethnically diverse areas in the capital, was made possible by a £1.7m fundraising campaign, which included significant contributions from Sport England and Camden Council.
The centre will offer a wide range of health, learning and arts activities and also have the capacity to respond to specific community needs.
A new, multi-activity studio – designed by the Hertfordshire-based architectural practice Widdup Amer – will offer activity programmes for all the community, including dance, yoga, martial arts and group exercise. A separate gym space will also be available for programmes and timetabled use by the local community.
One KX will also house Central YMCA’s Y Touring Theatre Company and a café, which will be run as a social enterprise.
