Minimum wage increases to £5.73
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced that the UK minimum wage will rise to £5.73 in October 2008.
The rate for 18-21 year olds will also increase from £4.60 to £4.77, while the 16-17 year old rate will rise from £3.40 to £3.53.
John Hutton, the government’s business secretary, said: "The National Minimum Wage remains one of the most important rights introduced by the Government in the last decade.
“Before it was introduced, some workers could expect to be paid as little as 35p an hour, our legislation has ensured that can no longer happen.”
A spokesperson for the British Hospitality Association (BHA) said the rise came as no surprise, but above inflation rises could put pressure on the industry.
"The increase was much as we expected - an increase of 3.8 per cent - but it has increased by 59 per cent since it was first introduced in 1999," he said.
"At a time of some current concern in the economy, employers need to continue to keep a tight control on wage costs."
