More relief on fuel prices would be welcome
All reports from Royal Melbourne show are good: despite the extremely bad weather for the first few days, the show finished strongly with all operators reportedly happy with the results.
Some operators who travelled to WA have reported a disappointing result at Perth Royal and as the travel costs have increased it is difficult to make the long trip across the Nullabor an economic proposition.
The first shows in country NSW and Victoria have been reasonable and while Mildura show claimed a good attendance it was affected by losing the show day holiday on Friday and excessive heat on Saturday nearing 40c.
These factors do have a definite affect on the takings.
Overall the shows appear to be holding up well and the doom and gloom reported by the papers is not appreciated by many people, but as we know, good news does not sell papers.
Fuel prices have settled a little but have not gone down as much as we would like and with the new log book laws for heavy vehicles in place leading to much confusion with the new fatigue laws and driving hours, a little more relief on fuel prices would be welcomed.
In this wide and varied country the drought still has firm grip in some areas while other areas look healthy as the grain season approaches and it will be interesting to see how the crop totals are this year as they do have a major effect on the rural economy.
