More sports join government’s Club Links Programme
A further 15 sports have signed up to the government’s Club Links Programme which aims to develop links between schools and sports clubs.
The scheme is designed to cut the 70 per cent drop out rate from sport among school leavers by increasing the proportion of young people moving from school sport to governing body-affiliated amateur sports clubs.
The 15 sports which have recently joined the Club Links Programme are: badminton, basketball, canoeing, cycling, golf, judo, hockey, netball, orienteering, rowing, rugby league, sailing, squash, table tennis and volleyball.
Sports minister, Richard Caborn, said: “Ensuring that teenagers can continue playing sport once they leave school is vital if we are to develop top quality young sports stars in the UK.
“Strengthening the links between clubs and schools also helps create a culture of participation from an early age and helps foster a real community spirit in an area.”
The seven sports already working with the scheme are athletics, cricket, football, gymnastics, rugby union, swimming and tennis.
