NZ$10m boost for Auckland cycle centre bid
A bid to establish a new Cycling Centre of Excellence and multi-sport facility at the Trusts Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, has been backed by the local authority.
Auckland Council is working in partnership with the venue on the proposals, which are to be submitted to Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) for consideration. The council has also agreed to pledge NZ$10m (£4.8m, EUR5.6m, US$7.8m) towards the cost of the proposed NZ$35m (£16.9m, EUR19.8m, US$27.3m) development.
Auckland's proposal for the Cycling Centre of Excellence and multi-sport facility is part of a procurement process for the project launched by SPARC last July. SPARC has set a deadline of 11 February for interested parties to submit their plans, which have to include an indoor velodrome, high performance training space and support facilities.
If Auckland's bid is selected, Trusts Stadium will contribute NZ$18m (£8.7m, EUR10.2m, US$14.1m) towards the scheme. Auckland mayor Len Brown said: "Council's support of this project shows that we are a progressive city and that we are firmly committed to making Auckland a world class destination."
The successful bid is due to be announced in April.
