New Euro lotto could offer £50m jackpots
The British, French and Irish are now able to buy tickets for the new European lottery which promises a minimum jackpot of £10m – but could rise to £50m.
From Monday, Spaniards will also be able to buy tickets which will cost £1.50. The first draw will take place in Paris next Friday (13 February).
The launch comes in the same week as the government called an investigation into why £3bn in lottery money remains untouched in government accounts, despite being assigned to good causes.
Tessa Jowell, culture secretary, blames the backlog on bureaucracy, and admitted that it threatens the ‘public confidence in proper management of the lottery’.
The Heritage Lottery fund is blamed with the biggest backlog, according to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
According to reports, £960m in allocated grants have yet to be taken up by their assigned recipients.
The European Lotto will be the second European joint venture in the lottery sector. In March 1993 a joint Scandinavian venture, called Viking Lotto, was kicked off in five Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden).
