A new independent body has been established to tackle a range of issues in women's sport.
The Commission on the Future of Women's Sports will be headed by Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson to address what has been described by the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF) as a 'crisis'. The first full meeting of the new body will take place this Autumn. Although the exact format is yet to be confirmed, members will be split into task forces to deal with the three key areas of inequality identified by the WSFF's annual Women in Sport Audit. The three areas of concern are leadership, profile and investment. According to the audit, only four of the leading 35 national governing bodies (NGB) for sport in the UK have female chief executives, while making up just 25 per cent of all NGB board members. Chief executive of WSFF, Sue Tibballs, said: "As 51 per cent of the population, women represent the largest potential opportunity for sport in the UK. Too many feel that its male domination has left it out of touch with an otherwise increasingly equal society." "Although positive steps are being taken, there's still much to be done in creating an equal playing field. Sport should welcome the commission with open arms." There is also concern that men's sports attract a significant amount more press coverage than their female counterparts, while the WSFF claim women's sports are under-funded to the extent that the entire annual budget of the England's women football team is three times less than that of England's men's coach Fabio Capello's salary. "The commission is exactly what winning 2012 was all about - providing the kind of inspiration and leadership to get more women and girls playing and competing in sport at every level," the commission's chair, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson said. Gerry Sutcliffe, minister for sport, added: "The huge growth in women's football has shown what is possible if governing bodies, clubs, coaches and the media make a commitment to giving women's sport a brighter future." Meeting every six months, the commission will comprise senior figures across a range of sectors with the WSFF audit being used as an annual measurement tool.
