New course launched for kids' fitness instructors
Following media reports of increasing bad health among children related to a poor diet and lack of exercise, a new fitness qualification at level 2 has been developed, called Instructing Health Related Fitness for Children.
This Central YMCA Qualifications-awarded course is now being delivered by a number of training providers including Fit Kids, FitClub, Rising Stars and FOCUS Training. It includes OFSTED (the Government Regulator for inspecting schools and childcare) standards and requirements for working with children.
The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) said that while the fitness industry is beginning to offer specific classes and programmes for children, instructors must ensure they are properly qualified to work with young people.
Currently just 5 per cent of all REPs members are qualified to work with children – this equates to one instructor for every 80,869 schoolchildren. The new qualification is designed to help to meet demand in this increasingly important area.
The new course, which is typically around 50 hours of learning, has been created to give instructors the skills, knowledge and competency to plan, teach and evaluate exercise sessions for children aged 5-16 years old. Successful candidates are given an additional category of registration at level 2 with the Register of Exercise Professionals.
