New image on the cards for West Bromwich
A £15m leisure and retail scheme in West Bromwich, will kickstart a multi-million pound regeneration of the town centre when work gets underway in January.
Midland and City Developments and PLK Properties are behind the high street development, which will bring 120,000sq ft of contemporary bars, restaurants and retail to the town centre, on a site fronted by the listed Kenrick & Jeffersen building, a former printworks.
Rob Rosson, head of West Bromwich Redevelopment at Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, said the privately funded scheme signals the start of an exciting future for the area: 'West Bromwich has been left behind until now, but this development shows the market believes it is about to take off.'
Due to open in September 2003, the scheme is the first step in the town's wider regeneration, which includes a development by Tesco comprising 374,000sq ft of retail and 20,000sq ft of leisure and the redevelopment of the Kings and Queens Shopping Centres, due to complete in 2007.
A key feature of the town's revamp is c/PLEX, a £38.8m development from Jubilee Arts, a local organisation concerned with community arts development. Designed by Alsop Architects the project will comprise a gallery, exhibition and performance space, bars and restaurants. Details: www.c-plex.co.uk
