New leisure complex for Isle of Man
A new multi-million pound family leisure complex is set to be created on the Isle of Man after development proposals put forward by the Sefton Group were selected by the island's government.
The Department of Tourism and Leisure revealed that the Liverpool-based developer was chosen following a formal expression of interest process for The Wave development, which will be built on the site of the former Summerland complex. Sefton Group has now been awarded a temporary license on the site for up to four months in order to allow the company to carry out detailed investigations of the site, before a formal long-term lease will be sought from the Tynwald.
Initial plans for The Wave include a multiplex cinema, a ten-pin bowling facility and exhibition areas capable of accommodating skating. Casino and bingo facilities are also earmarked for the complex, as well as restaurants, bars and conference facilities. Martyn Quayle, minister for tourism and leisure, said: "The Wave will provide a new destination venue for all age groups from tots to teens and beyond, and fulfils the department's objectives for the site.
"This is a very significant step forward in a long-held ambition of the department to see a state-of-the-art, family-friendly facility to replace Summerland with what would be a fantastic iconic building." Mark Lewin, chief operating officer for the Sefton Group, added: "We are now committed to further investment which will enable us to proceed with the next steps expeditiously. such as the critical site surveys and the necessary consultations.
"We will then be able to proceed quickly with construction provided all the requisite approvals and contractual agreements are also completed in a timely manner." It is hoped that all necessary surveys and approvals will be concluded by 30 June in order to before the Tynwald in July for the scheme to replace Summerland, which was severely damaged by a large fire in 1973.
