New survey reveals support for Olympics
New research from London Councils, the organisation which represents the capital's 33 local authorities, has revealed the majority of Londoners are in favour of the city hosting the 2012 Olympics.
However, London Councils is now calling for a campaign to keep Londoners fully informed about the benefits of the Games after more than half of those questioned said they lacked enough information. More than a third admitted they were unsure about what is meant by the term 'legacy' and a third of people are not aware of the venues being used at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, although one in three did also express an interest in volunteering during the event.
London Councils has revealed that it is working with the Mayor of London to establish a new multi-agency body to ensure that the legacy benefits of the Games is not focused solely on the Olympic Park area, but across the whole of the city. Merrick Cockell, chair of London Councils, said: "The legacy from this historic event must be for all Londoners - not just those closest to the Olympic Park. Boroughs will be vital in delivering the legacy of the Games and our research clearly shows a need for a London-wide legacy board."
The research was carried out on behalf of London Councils by market research agency, MRUK, with more than 1,000 people from across the capital taking part.
