Obesity campaign for Germany
The German government is launching a new five-point action plan to cut obesity rates sharply by 2010.
The ‘Fit Instead of Fat’ initiative includes improving the quality of food in schools and hospitals, making nutritional information more readily available on all kinds of food products, and boosting exercise levels in children.
A quarter of adult Germans suffer from cardiovascular diseases, while there are around four million diabetics in the country.
Health problems related to obesity are already estimated to cost Germany 70bn euro a year – 30 per cent of its overall health costs.
The timely plan follows a survey by the International Association for the Study of Obesity which revealed that Germany has the highest number of overweight people in Europe.
More than 75.4 per cent of men and 58.9 per cent of women were classified as overweight. Running a close second was the UK, where 58.5 per cent of women are overweight. The Czech Republic came in second among men.
The thinnest Europeans of both sexes live in Italy and France.
