Peterborough appoints ‘exercise champion’
Peterborough City Council and the Peterborough Primary Care Trust have appointed a new ‘exercise champion’ to help tackle obesity in the city.
Former fitness instructor Sarah Smith has been appointed to the role, in which she aims to encourage GPs to recommend exercise classes to patients who may be at risk from a wide range of disabilities and health problems.
“There is plenty of evidence to indicate that a healthy exercise routine can be more effective than medication in helping people who are facing the prospect of suffering from a range of common ailments,” said Smith. “Early referral for some simple exercises could prevent the onset of obesity and serious health problems.
“Many people think their health condition prevents them from engaging in exercise but a properly planned fitness programme can actually bring long-term and permanent improvements in their health. Exercise can often eliminate their dependence on medication as well.
“By working through GP surgeries we want people who are at high risk of heart problems, strokes and other conditions to help themselves through exercise to prevent these problems from developing. Using exercise as a preventative method is the way forward for health care – not just as a rehabilitation process.”
