Plans to extend The Deep
Hull's submarium, The Deep, has revealed plans for a £6m Phase 2 development.
The new project includes covered queuing areas, a larger retail space, a doubling of the educational facilites and what is promised to be the world's biggest display on the twilight zone of the ocean.
Cllr David Gemmell, chair of The Deep says the deciion on whether the project can proceed is in the hands of the funders but hopes a green light would enable The Deep to explore many environmental issues:
'The twilight zone is the biggest living space on the planet and yet we know little more about it than the surface of the moon. Despite this ignorance we continue to trawl deeper and deeper into this delicate ecosystem.'
The plans were brought forward due to the possibility of additional funding from the Millennium Commission, the European Regional Development Fund and Cityventure. A final decision is expected in April.
The Deep is a registered charity dedicated to educational research and regeneration of Hill and is a partnership between Hull City Council and the University of Hull. Details: www.thedeep.co.uk
