Public sector spa wins top award
The UK's first public sector day spa, Spa London, has been named Day Spa of the Year in this year's Professional Beauty Awards.
The facility, a joint venture between sports trust Greenwich Leisure (GLL) and Tower Hamlets Council, came top of a shortlist which also included The Sanctuary in Covent Garden and City Point Spa in Docklands.
Launched in May 2007, Spa London is located in York Hall, on the site of original Victorian Turkish Baths, and was created to make the day spa concept affordable and accessible to more people.
Pauline Wallace, manager of Spa London, said: "We worked hard to communicate at a local level that the spa was something for all the community and to ensure that the environment was welcoming and non-intimidating.
"Spa London offers a range of concessionary rates for those on benefits and senior citizens - typically a concessionary visitor could visit the thermal facilities at the spa for three hours for as little as £6.75."
