RSC season in jeopardy after technicians vote to strike
The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon could find its programme affected after technicians voted for strike action over job cuts.
The union Bectu, whose members include stage hands, electricians and wardrobe staff, said that 90 per cent backed industrial action in a vote, showing an overwhelming vote of no confidence in the management.
Bectu has been angered by the RSC's artistic director Adrian Noble's plans to downsize the RSC's operations, especially in the company's London home at the Barbican, in favour of more touring and performances in the West End.
Up to 60 jobs would go at Stratford - almost 10 per cent of the workforce, and a further 85 at the Barbican, where staff are expected to follow the lead of the Stratford protest.
RSC managing director Chris Foy said that Bectu had not informed the company of plans for strike action: We have received no notification of industrial action from Bectu. Bectu have told us they want a negotiated settlement and not to enter into protracted industrial action.
