Renfrewshire invests in sport for kids
Renfrewshire Council has launched a £1.4m scheme to encourage young people to particpate in sport.
Running from October to May 2003, the scheme gives five to 15-year olds free access to a wide range of activities, from canoeing to trampolining, in a bid to promote the fun side of sport and exercise.
John MacDonald of Renfrewshire Council said it had worked with schools and local organisations to create a varied programme to encourage more children to get involved: 'The health and fitness of local youngsters is at the forefront of our plans. We hope to use this programme to start children on a path to long-term involvement in physical activity.'
Meanwhile, the council has announced plans to invest £200,000 to improve playground facilities in all primary schools in the area, which it says sparks an early interest in exercise. Details: +44 (0)141 840 3127
