US-based Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company has announced the opening of its first luxury resort in Japan with the Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa - situated in the grounds of the Kise Country Club.
The new resort overlooks the East China Sea and has been designed to reflect the Okinawan concept of hospitality or "gusuku", which translates as "castle" or "guest house".
Facilities include The Ritz-Carlton Spa by ESPA, which is housed in a separate enclave and has been inspired by the adjacent Yanbaru forest to draw upon the "power of nature".
The spa includes four treatment rooms with a shower; four dry treatment rooms; a cabana; a nail studio with three stations; a relaxation room; and a warm Japanese-style bath facility.
A stone sauna and a dry sauna also form part of the spa, together with the Ocean and Forest Suites - housing two single-bed treatment rooms with a shower, a soaking tub and balcony.
Elsewhere at the Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa is a fitness gym equipped by Technogym; an indoor temperature-controlled swimming pool; and an outdoor whirlpool.
Ritz-Carlton president and COO Herve Humler said: "We have no doubt that Okinawa has the potential to be a resort island of true international appeal, attracting visitors from all over the world."
Victor Clavell, area vice president, Asia for Ritz-Carlton, added: "The culture of friendship or 'keion' on this island blends seamlessly with The Ritz-Carlton promise to offer the finest personal service and facilities in a warm yet refined ambiance."
