Role of REPs recognised by industry experts
Leading health and sports professionals and representatives from the Department of Health have been reinforcing the importance of the Register of exercise Professionals at a series of conferences.
Dr Sally Barnard from the Medical Defence Union spoke at the WRIGHT Foundation conference at the NEC recently, stating that their guidance to doctors to refer patients to level 3 registered exercise professionals was supported by the General Medical Council, which has indicated it would have no concerns about a doctor referring a patient to someone on REPs at this level.
Both Caroline Flint MP, public health minister and Alison Giles from the Department of Health, also spoke about the important role of the Register at the FIA’s Parliamentary debate held on 9 November.
Dr Fiona Adshead, deputy chief medical officer, writing in support of the FIA’s Code of Practice, stated that referral schemes provide great opportunities for registered exercise professionals to work in partnership with health professionals and these programmes contribute directly to the delivery of the Choosing Health White Paper.
The Register is also contributing evidence to the review of guidance for exercise programmes being considered by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, and has a series of meeting with the Department of Health planned.
It is expected that the department will agree to a review of the National Quality Assurance Framework.
Roger Draper, CEO of Sport England, said that we need to invest in people, in training and recruitment, and used REPs as an example of how personal achievement can be recognised and to help directly in the improvement of qualifications and standards.
