SWT successfully completes £5.1m lottery project
The Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) has completed its largest ever externally funded project.
The £5.1m five-year Reserves Enhancement Programme saw improvements and work undertaken on 95 of SWT’s 123 reserves.
The bulk of the funding (£3.69m) was awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the largest award made to any UK wildlife trust, with the remaining £1.41m raised from other sources.
Simon Milne, SWT’s chief executive, said: “This has been a massive project and one that has contributed to many key areas of SWT’s work.
“From improving the visitor experience to ensuring SWT meets access legislation, from volunteer training and accommodation to on-site surveys, it has been challenging project and I congratulate all those involved in its successful completion.
“The nature of our reserves has meant that simply getting materials on site has required creative thinking, in some cases we’ve even had to use a landing craft and airlift supplies in by helicopter.”
With more than 63km of pathways installed or enhanced, 13 bridges built, three visitor centres upgraded (Falls of Clyde, New Lanark; Montrose Basin, Angus; and Loch of the Lowes, near Dunkeld), woodland improvements on 24 reserves, 14 leaflets published and a comprehensive reserves guide produced, 200 signs, interpretation panels and waymarkers erected, the list of achievements is long and wide-ranging.
