Scottish Parliament backs new Marine Bill
Plans for the introduction of a new Marine Bill, designed to provide greater protection for the waters around Scotland's coast, have been supported by the Scottish Parliament.
Measures included in the legislation, which aims to "herald a new era" for Scottish seas and was passed on 4 February, include a new National Marine Plan to improve decision making in the marine environment. Greater protection for seals, new powers to select and manage Marine Protection Areas and a simple licensing system to promote investment and growth are also among the Bill's proposals.
Scottish environment secretary Richard Lochhead said: "Our seas are home to some of the world's most precious wildlife and stunning habitats, and support tens of thousands of jobs by powering our nation through wind and wave. "This new framework will ensure that our seas continue to oil our economy and put food on our tables, however new challenges such as climate change require new approaches. We must modernise in order to meet increasing and competing demands on our seas."
