Slug and Lettuce art competition
The Slug and Lettuce bar chain and a group of art institutions have joined together to find the 'most popular piece of student fine art'.
The initiative, backed by DCMS minister, Kim Howells; The Times art critic, Richard Cork and James Hobbs, editor for Artists & Illustrators is intended to 'give students the chance to experience exhibiting as a fine artist as well as bring fine art into public spaces not usually associated with art'.
Paul Filler, Slug and Lettuce brand manager said: 'Here at the Slug and Lettuce, we pride ourselves on having a contemporary culture, which is open to new ideas and in touch with the local communities where we live and work - that's why we are delighted to be involved in this project.
'We hope the project helps give these students a valuable lesson in what it's like to be an exhibiting artist in touch with the general public'.
Students have been asked to create a piece of fine art, which will be shortlisted in May. The top ten pieces chosen from each art institution will be exhibited in a local Slug and Lettuce bar during May and voted on by the general public. The winning student in each area receives a prize of up to £500 and will go forward to a national final to be held at the Slug and Lettuce in Soho, London in June.
