At least 43 people have died in a stampede at a South African football stadium. The disaster occurred last night during a football match between two of the country's most popular teams, the Orlando Pirates and the Kaizer Chiefs at the 60,000-capacity Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg. An estimated 120,000 people were trying to see the game when a stampede began outside the stadium in a tragedy harking back to the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. President Thabo Mbeki has ordered an immediate inquiry.
