South Bank chief tenders resignation
The chief executive of the South Bank Centre (SBC), Karsten Witt, has announced his intention to resign after seeing through a six-month examination of business practices at the centre.
The review will decide on the future direction of the centre as a whole, and its constituent parts, chiefly the Royal Festival Hall and the Hayward Gallery.
The centre has struggled to find a consistent attitude towards further development, with several failed architectural proposals.
Witt, who joined the South Bank in 1999, believes that the centre would be best served by a programme which allows greater flexibility: I have concluded that SBC should move towards decentralisation with greater autonomy for its flagship venues, the Royal Festival Hall and the Hayward Gallery.
Witt added that he felt the position of chief executive in its current or a similar format was untenable: Whatever the outcome of the review, the role of chief executive should not exist in its present form.
