South East tourism gets a boost at awards ceremony
The UK’s South East achieved three winners and four runners-up in the recent Group Travel Awards held by Group Travel Organiser magazine at London’s Hilton Park Lane.
The three winners included Eastbourne as Most Group-Friendly UK Destination, Bluewater – said to be Europe’s largest out of town shopping centre – as Best Shopping Venue for Groups, and P&O Ferries’ Dover/Calais cross channel route as Best Sea Crossing Operator.
Elsewhere, Eurotunnel came second in the Best Sea Crossing Operator category, The Kings Ferry second in the Best Large Coach Operator sector and Scotland and Bates was Best Small Coach Operator runner up.
Second place in the Best Inland/River Boat Operator category went to French Brothers River Thames Passenger Boat Operators.
The city of Portsmouth won special commendation in the Best Information for Groups section, to recognise the input the local authority tourism departments put into the group travel market.
Finalists for each category came from every area of both the national and international tourism industry and were nominated by readers of the magazine.
Tourism South East’s head of marketing, Lynn Redgrave, said: "We are proud the region has been recognised and congratulate the winners and runners up for their sterling work."
Tourism South East is the name for the newly amalgamated Southern and South East England Tourist Boards and promotes Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East and West Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Oxfordshire, Surrey and parts of Dorset and Wiltshire. Details: www.tourismsoutheast.com
