Proposals for the relocation of a Tesco store in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, to a site currently occupied by the town's sports centre will be looked at by the government.
It comes after Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman wrote to the communities secretary Hazel Blears to raise concerns over a confidential agreement between Kirklees Metropolitan Council and the supermarket giant. The proposals would see Tesco move to the site, with the funds generated from the sale of the land put towards a new £26m leisure facility in Spring Grove. Plans for the new sports centre, scheduled to open in 2011, have already been drawn up and include a 25m eight-lane swimming pool, large sports hall and a 150-station fitness suite. Sheerman expressed concerns that the agreement "undermines the proper planning process and puts at disadvantage applications from other Huddersfield retailers". In response, the council's cabinet member for regeneration, Ken Sims, said: "There is no ‘secrecy agreement’ between this council and any developer. That would be illegal. Any development schemes we enter into with third parties are scrupulously examined and follow the letter of the law. "What he fails to mention is one of the biggest benefits that the town so badly needs and that is a new and modern sports centre, which will attract well over half a million people a year to enjoy top quality facilities enabling them to stay fit and healthy."
