Sports participation continues to increase
Overall sports participation across England has continued to increase over the past year, according to the latest Active People Survey from Sport England.
More than 7 million adults over the age of 16 years old - 16.6 per cent of the population - took part in sport at least three times a week for 30 minutes at moderate intensity in the 12-month period to April 2010. According to the latest research, the number of participants has grown by 193,000 compared with 2007-08, with male participation increasing by 209,000. Female participation, however, fell by 16,000.
A Sport England spokesperson said: "Among those achieving significant increases were sports which have programmes encouraging more flexible participation, such as British Cycling's Sky Ride and England Netball's Back to Netball. "The number of adults cycling at least once a week has increased by more than 100,000, with netball up by almost 20,000."
The surveys, which collect data from 192,000 people over the age of 16-years-old, are designed to measure Sport England's progress in seeking to increase participation by one million more adults by 2013.
