Theatre restoration at Alexandra Palace
A Grade II listed theatre, which has been laid dormant for 65 years at Alexandra Palace, is to be restored to its former glory.
The theatre dates back to around 1875 and in its time has been used as a cinema hall and a holding place for BBC props. It also narrowly avoided being destroyed by a fire in 1980 when the wind changed at the 11th hour. Currently in a severe state of dilapidation, a Palace spokesman said it would cost millions to bring the theatre back into use.
The foyer was restored last summer to allow access to the auditorium following a grant from English Heritage, and a Friends of the Theatre group was formed last month (March) to help raise funds for the restoration.
Actress Juliet Stevenson, a member of Friends of the Theatre, said it would be great to see the theatre brought back to life: 'Given a big injection of creative energy, something extraordinary could be made of it.' Details: +44 (0)20 8365 4328
