Theme parks with a difference
It has been reported that a Dracula theme park is now under development in Romania.
The government plans to build the $31.5m, 520 -acre project at a lakeside resort north of Bucharest and attractions will include restaurants, hotels, a zoo, a golf course and a Gothic castle with appropriate effects, reports UPI.
The development was originally to have been situated at Sighisoara in Transylvania, where Bram Stoker's famous novel is set, but conservationists opposed the plan, fearing that heavy tourism would damage a medieval castle and protected forest in the area.
A survey subsequently revealed that at its projected lakeside site, the park could expect to receive over one million visitors a year, compared with 600,000 at Sighisoara.
Elsewhere, Reuters has reported that Massine Productions GmbH is hoping to construct a 100,000sq ft replica of East Germany in an area southeast of Berlin.
The park will come with surly border guards, rigorous customs checks, authentic East German ostmarks and restaurants serving bland East German cuisine.
A spokesperson for Massine is quoted as saying the idea was not to make a joke out of East Germany but It was an important part of Germany's history and the period should be recreated as accurately as possible.
Nostagia for the former German Democratic Republic has lingered ever since the 1990 reunification of east and west.
