Tomatoes credited with further health benefits
Tomatoes have been attributed to yet another health benefit with the news that it can prevent and even cure oral cancer.
Lycopene, the pigment that makes tomatoes red and is found in tomato sauces, ketchup and soup, has anti-cancer properties. It has already been found to reduce the risk of several cancers including breast, prostrate and cancer of the colon. The team of researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that Lycopene restores a natural process which helps the body kill off cells that are not developing properly.
Tomatoes have had good press for the health conscious in recent years. When Anita Roddick described anti-ageing creams as 'complete pap' last October, she said the key to longevity, healthiness and happiness was tomatoes. Tomatoes make you happy, said Italian-born Miss Roddick. Have you ever met a miserable Italian? They are irritating but never miserable.
