Tourism sector opposes bed tax in New Zealand
The Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) has announced its opposition to a proposed tourism tax being introduced to help pay for a new stadium in Auckland.
The TIA’s online survey – which attracted almost 500 respondents from its 2,000 members – showed that only 4 per cent supported the introduction of visitor taxes and 99 per cent thought that the new stadium should instead be financed by government funding and rates, commercial investment and sponsorship deals.
Hospitality respondents warned that visitor taxes would make small and budget accommodation providers unprofitable and larger operators said they would have to absorb any taxes until 2008 as tariffs have already been quoted to international travel wholesalers.
TIA CEO Fiona Luhrs said: “The wider tourism industry is in full support of the Rugby World Cup 2011 and look forward to the event being a huge success, but the funding lines for a stadium should not be from bed and departure taxes.”
The introduction of a proposed bed tax in the UK is facing similar opposition by Visit London and the British Hospitality Association. Details: www.tianz.org.nz
