UK Sport confirms 2011 medal targets
UK Sport has revealed that it is targeting between 30-61 medals in Summer Olympic sports whose World Championships are taking place in 2011.
The elite sport agency has also outlined its aim for Summer Paralympic sports, with between 34-52 medals set as the goal for competitors this year. More than £100m a year is being invested in the four-year period ahead of the 2012 Games, funding that UK Sport said has enabled it to increase medal-winning ambitions.
According to the agency, the medals that have been targeted by sports in major competitions this year represent an increase on the total number won in the year prior to the 2008 Games. UK Sport chief executive officer Liz Nicholl said: "British athletes are among the best funded and supported in the world, with record levels of investment through to London 2012.
"It is encouraging that, with 500 days to go to the home Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, sports continue to show ambition and confidence in what can be collectively achieved."
