Aston Villa Football Club has confirmed it has received an approach from an unnamed bidder to buy the club.
The news comes following reports in the media which claimed that a Russian consortium was lining up a takeover bid for the Birmingham-based club.
A spokesperson for the club said: "We have received a preliminary approach which could lead to an offer for the club and shareholders will be updated of any further developments."
Shares in the club rose to a year-high of 487.50p following the news.
