The Sports Council for Wales is contributing £210,000 to the Welsh Institute of Sport to set up a national academy for gymnastics. The initiative hopes to target young children and encourage gymnastics talents to flourish at grass roots level. Former Commonwealth Games gymnast, Jason Wink, who joins the academy as a coach, says the coaching will nurture future stars of the sport: The gymnastics classes provide an excellent opportunity for young children to gain the core physical attributes needed in any sport. They mix sport with fun, confidence-building and social interaction. The Welsh Institute of Sport will also provide the country's elite gymnasts with training and sports-science backing needed to stay at world-class levels.
