Welsh National Opera bailed out
Arts Council Wales has teamed up with its English counterpart to grant the Welsh National Opera (WNO) a £1.2m funding package to help offset losses during the recession.
Arts Council England's Sustain programme, which bails out arts organisations during financial difficulties, has allocated £900,000 over two years, while Arts Council Wales has awarded the WNO £300,000 over two years, in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government.
The Welsh-based opera company has benefited from funding from both councils as a consequence holding regular performances in both countries.
Nick Capaldi, CEO of Arts Council of Wales, said: "Welsh National Opera has always been very successful at raising significant amounts of money from the private sector. However, the recession has meant that although box office takings and support from individual donors have remained healthy, income from other sources - notably trusts and businesses - has fallen significantly short this year.
"The company is unique in being funded jointly by the Arts Councils in Wales and England. We're delighted that our colleagues in England have recognised the value of Welsh National Opera's work and are making this substantial investment in the company's future."
