Western Australia sport and recreation minister Terry Waldron has helped mark the start of work on a AU$95.14m (US$99m, EUR81m, £63m) redevelopment of Perth's nib Stadium.
The project includes the dismantling of the temporary eastern and southern grandstands and the construction of replacement stands, as well as the installation of a new playing surface.
BGC Construction has been appointed lead contractor, with the new east stand to house new catering and toilet facilities; open corporate boxes seating 420; and a barbeque terrace.
A new uncovered permanent south stand will house two large video screens, while there will also be a new PA, CCTV and pitch lighting system installed as part of the scheme.
Waldron said: "The Department of Sport and Recreation has assisted BGC in arranging the removal of the temporary grandstands and the builder has wasted no time getting started.
"The project will increase the sustainability of our sporting codes which use a rectangular pitch and make for a more comfortable and enjoyable match day for spectators."
